Welcome
The Caumermolen is probably the oldest mill in Heerlen and has been declared a national heritage site. The present-day complex, constructed largely of brick, is a renovation dating from 1787. However, the original mill was much older. It was mentioned in documents dating as far back as 1371 in which the mill was referred to as a ‘banmolen’ (lord’s mill), meaning that the local inhabitants of a certain region were obliged to have their corn ground there in exchange for payment in kind. These milling rights are an indication that the mill (or its predecessor) must have existed as early as the 11th century. The milling device was removed after World War II. Unfortunately, half of the mill burned down in 1964. The section destroyed in the fire was rebuilt in 2000 and beautifully restored in the style of a carré farmstead with an enclosed central courtyard, typical for Limburg.
